Dear Prof. Rodwell:
My name is Zeal Patel and I am a first-year student, studying Computer Engineering. I had some idea that I want to study something related to computers. Initially, I was planning to pursue a major in Computer Science, but then my uncle told me that I should rather study Computer Engineering. By doing so I will not only learn about computers and how to code programs but also about electronics and how the software component of the computers work with the hardware. In simple terms, Computer Engineering major is fifty percent Computer Science and fifty percent Electrical Engineering. That is why I decided upon the major I did because I wanted a more well-rounded education in the computer field rather than a single discipline.
As long as short-term goals are concerned, I want to have at least some expertise in one programming language by the end of my second semester. Doing so will allow me to hopefully intern at a company in the Information Technology department. Which is my second goal for this year, by next summer I want to intern in the field I am currently studying. And for my long-term goals, when I graduate from this college, I want to work at a company that is tackling some real-life challenges, like Tesla or SpaceX. Companies like these are trying to solve what I think are two of the biggest challenges of our generation. Now more than ever we need an alternative fuel for our automobiles and second, making humans a multi-planetary species. My dream is to contribute in these efforts. That is one of the reasons why I chose to study Computer Engineering because every day there is some engineer who is trying to solve a problem using computers. The engineers at Tesla are constantly working on their Autopilot software, so they can make the roads safer. That is one project I would love to work in the future, making Artificial Intelligent bots that make human lives easier and safer. Another long-term goal is to start a business that introduces a product that affects the society on a greater scale. I want to make a difference in the society, but I do not know how will I do it or even what aspects of our daily lives need a change. But, that is what I think colleges are for, I am hoping that during my time here, I will find some answers.
Furthermore, I think in the upcoming days engineers would solve problems more efficiently because instead of doing all the problems themselves, they will have help from AI robots. We have been seeing this for years in popular culture like Ironman. I think the only reason why he is inventing suits at this pace is because of his AI assistant Jarvis. He helps him tremendously with problem-solving and I think now is time to bring this from fiction to reality. That is what I see as the future of engineering and engineers. An optimistic future that awaits.
Sincerely yours,
Zeal Patel
